Using the phone can become frustrating and isolating for an older adult who has trouble hearing the ringer, reading small buttons, or remembering phone numbers. For persons living with dementia, those challenges multiply: they may not recognize a ringing sound, may struggle to navigate a contact list, or may answer unwanted calls that cause confusion or anxiety.

We chose the VTech SN5147 because it addresses all of these barriers in a single system. The 90dB ringer and flashing visual alert make incoming calls hard to miss. The 50dB amplification and tone control ensure conversations come through clearly, even for people with significant hearing loss. The 8 photo speed-dial keys remove the need to remember or look up numbers - the person just presses a photo to call. The smart call blocker helps filter out unwanted calls, reducing disruption and potential scam exposure. The built-in answering machine with 22-minute recording and slow-speed playback gives the person time to understand messages at their own pace.

What makes this system especially practical for caregivers is that everything - speed dials, call blocking, answering machine greeting, volume settings - can be configured before the phone reaches the person using it. It also serves as a base station for additional handsets like the SN5107 or the SN5307 photo dial handset, so the system can be expanded to cover multiple rooms.
