The Joe & Bella Short-Sleeve Magnetic Button Shirt is an adaptive men's shirt that looks like a classic button-down but fastens with hidden magnets instead of traditional buttons. This makes getting dressed faster and easier for persons living with dementia, Parkinson's, arthritis, or limited mobility in one or both hands. The magnets are concealed behind real-looking buttons, so the shirt maintains a polished, everyday appearance. Only the top closure is a functional button for a natural neckline finish. The shirt features stretch cuffs and enlarged armholes for easy arm entry, and the relaxed fit provides extra room in the midsection while still looking put-together tucked or untucked. Made from 90% polyester and 10% spandex, the fabric is lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and moisture-wicking.

Buttoning a shirt requires fine motor coordination, grip strength, and sequencing. For a person living with dementia or Parkinson's, these skills often decline before the desire to dress well does. Caregivers who assist with dressing know how time-consuming and physically awkward traditional buttons can be, especially when the person resists help or becomes frustrated during the process.

We chose this shirt because it solves the button problem without making the person look or feel like they are wearing adaptive clothing. Many adaptive garments on the market use Velcro or open-back designs that are functional but clinical. The Joe & Bella approach is different: the magnets are invisible, hidden behind buttons that look completely standard. The person sees a normal shirt. The caregiver - or the person themselves - gets a closure that clicks shut in seconds, even with one hand.

  • To put the shirt on: slide the arms through the enlarged armholes and stretch cuffs, then bring the front panels together. The magnets will click into alignment naturally. A light press along the front seam ensures all magnets are secure.
  • To remove the shirt: gently pull the front panels apart. The magnets separate with minimal effort.
  • Secure all magnets into their closed position before placing the shirt in the washing machine to protect the magnets and fabric during the cycle.
  • Machine wash cold. Tumble dry on low.
  • Do not iron. Do not dry clean.
  • If between sizes, consider sizing up for a more comfortable fit.
