Fire Prevention Week runs from October 4 to 10 this year. It's a good reminder to take a fresh look at the room where many home fires begin: the kitchen.
If you support a parent or partner who is living with dementia, you don't need a renovation or a long list of rules. A short walk-through, done together during a visit, can catch the small things that matter most. It can also set up supports that keep working on the days you're not there.
Here's a calm, 15-minute check you can do this week, along with a few ideas for keeping your loved one involved along the way.
Why the kitchen is a good place to start
Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires and home fire injuries (1). The most common factor behind those fires is a simple one: cooking left unattended (1).
That's actually encouraging. Many kitchen fires come down to everyday moments, like stepping away to answer the phone or forgetting a pot on a back burner. Small habits and the right supports can help with exactly those moments.
Memory changes can make those moments happen more often. A person living with dementia may sometimes leave the stove or other kitchen appliances on (2). The check below is built with that in mind.
The 15-minute kitchen check
Go through these together, at your own pace, during a visit or over a video call. Most take a minute or two. If your loved one lives alone, many of these steps are about building routines and reminders that work without you in the room.
1. Test the smoke alarm together
Press the test button and listen for the sound. Testing smoke alarms regularly is recommended: at least twice a year (3), and ideally once a month (4). Some families tie it to the clock changes in spring and fall, so it becomes part of the routine. If your loved one lives alone, put the next test date on both your calendars, and check that the alarm can be heard from the bedroom with the door closed.
2. Clear the stovetop and give things a home
Move tea towels, paper towels, oven mitts, and packaging away from the burners. A clear stovetop when the stove is off is just as helpful as when it's on. Then choose one set spot for each of these items, like a hook or a drawer away from the stove, and add a label if that helps. When everything has a home, putting things back becomes a habit rather than something to remember.
3. Turn pot handles inward
Handles that stick out over the edge are easy to bump. Turning them toward the back of the stove is a small habit that's easy to share.
4. Keep a lid within reach
If a small fire starts in a pan, sliding a lid over it and turning off the heat can smother it. Leave the lid on until the pan has cooled, and never use water on a grease fire. If the fire doesn't go out right away, leave the home and call 911 (5). Keep the lid in the same spot every time, such as on a hook right beside the stove, so it's easy to find quickly.
5. Notice the small signs
Look for scorched pots, burn marks near the stove, or a smoke alarm that seems to go off more often. If you don't live together, these signs are often how changes first show up, so take a quiet look during each visit. Seeing them doesn't mean cooking has to stop. It's useful information that can guide your next steps.
6. Get to know the stove
Check whether the stove is gas or electric, and whether it uses knobs or touch controls. This matters if you decide to add a safety device, since each one works with specific stove types.
7. Set up timers and visual reminders
Setting a timer every time the stove or oven is in use is a recommended habit (2). A loud, easy-to-read kitchen timer kept right beside the stove works well. Some people living with dementia also label the burner they use most so it's easy to spot (6). For someone who lives alone, a short sign near the stove can act as a gentle prompt, such as "I am cooking. Do not leave the kitchen." (6) A second note by the front door, like "Stove off before heading out," can help too.
8. Charge devices safely
This year's Fire Prevention Week theme focuses on lithium-ion batteries, the kind found in phones, tablets, laptops, and e-bikes (7). Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, use the charger that came with the device, and keep charging cables away from the stove.
9. Post key numbers and plan check-ins
Write emergency numbers, a nearby neighbor, and a family contact in large print. Keep the list where your loved one can see it easily. If they live alone, a short call around mealtimes can double as a friendly cooking check, and a trusted neighbor with a spare key can be a helpful backup.
10. Consider a safety layer for the stove
For some families, especially when a loved one lives alone, a device adds peace of mind while they keep cooking. Eugeria carries two options that work at different moments.
Smarturns replaces the existing stove knobs and adds a small motion sensor. If a burner is on and nobody has been near the stove for a set amount of time, a local alarm sounds. Family members can also get an alert by app or text, even if they live elsewhere. It works with most gas and electric stoves that use knobs, keeps working without internet, and doesn't change how the stove is used. It does not turn the stove off.
FireAvert is designed for electric stoves. It listens for your smoke alarm and cuts power to the stove 20 to 60 seconds after the alarm sounds. It installs in under 10 minutes without tools and works whether or not anyone else is home. Because it relies on a working smoke alarm, it's another good reason to start with step 1.
Doing the check without taking over
The kitchen often holds a lot of meaning. It may be where your loved one fed a family, hosted holidays, or made the morning coffee for decades. How you approach this check matters as much as what you find.
Invite them to lead where they can. Ask them to press the smoke alarm button, or to show you where the lids are kept. Present any changes as things you're doing together for the whole household, not as a judgment about their abilities.
If something needs to change, start small. One adjustment at a time is easier to accept and easier to turn into a routine.
When to ask for a home visit from a professional
You don't have to assess everything on your own. Having an occupational therapist assess the kitchen for safety is often recommended (2). An occupational therapist can suggest changes that fit your loved one's abilities and daily routines.
A home visit lets a professional see the kitchen as your loved one actually uses it. Ask your loved one's doctor or your local health and community services about arranging one, since what's available varies from place to place.
Your loved one's healthcare team can help too, especially if you've noticed changes in memory or attention while they cook. If your family is still early in this journey, our guide to 10 things to do after a diagnosis can help you plan the bigger picture.
Frequently asked questions
How often should older adults test their smoke alarms?
Monthly testing is recommended (4), with twice a year as a minimum (3). Choose a rhythm you'll remember, and do it together when you can.
What is the biggest kitchen fire risk for seniors?
Unattended cooking is the leading factor in home cooking fires (1). For someone living with memory changes, forgetting a pot on the stove is a common concern, which is why timers, reminders, and a clear stovetop help.
How can I keep the kitchen safe if my parent lives alone?
Focus on supports that work without you there: a set place for everything, visual reminders near the stove, regular check-in calls around mealtimes, and a neighbor who can help. A stove alert or automatic shut off device can add another layer, and an occupational therapist can suggest what fits best.
Is there a device that turns off the stove automatically?
Yes, for electric stoves. FireAvert cuts power to an electric stove when the smoke alarm sounds. Other devices, like Smarturns, send an alert instead of turning the stove off, and work with most gas and electric stoves that use knobs. An occupational therapist can help you choose what fits.
What is the 2026 Fire Prevention Week theme?
This year's theme, "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower," focuses on charging lithium-ion batteries safely (7). Some regions run their own campaigns with different themes, so your local fire service is a good place to learn what's happening near you.
A few minutes that go a long way
A short check this week can make the kitchen feel safer for everyone and help your loved one keep doing something that matters to them. You don't need to finish the whole list today. Pick one or two items, and come back to the rest when you're ready.
